HOW WE WORK
We work with your developers to get vulnerabilities fixed.
An assessment makes your software more secure only when its vulnerabilities are fixed. A report that lists findings and leaves your developers alone with them rarely achieves that. We design every assessment around the developers who will act on its results.
Many of our analysts worked as software developers before moving into security. We explain findings the way we would have wanted them explained: in your code, with clear priorities, and with someone to ask while you fix them. Our focus on source code follows from this. Vulnerabilities are found, explained, and fixed where developers work: in the code.
An Assessment, Step by Step
-
Understand the application
In a kickoff call, your developers explain the architecture, what the application is meant to do, and where they see risks themselves. We then import the code into a code property graph, using the open-source platform Joern, and map where attacker-controlled data enters, where it can cause harm, and which code enforces authentication, authorization, and the separation between users or tenants. This map decides where the effort goes.
-
Find root causes
We review the code with the help of the graph and, where you permit it, AI. If you want, we write queries for your code base that, unlike generic scanner rules, take your frameworks, input validation, and coding conventions into account. Manual review concentrates on what tools cannot decide: whether authorization is complete, whether business logic can be abused, whether tenants are separated, and whether cryptography and sessions are handled correctly. For each confirmed vulnerability, we search your code for every other instance of the same flaw.
-
Validate and prioritize
We report nothing we have not reproduced and whose impact we have not demonstrated. Each finding is rated with the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS v3.1), but a score alone does not tell your team what to fix first. We also assess what each finding means for your application: how realistic an attack is, what is at stake, and how much effort a fix takes. The report recommends an order, and says clearly which findings matter now and which can wait.
-
Report for developers
Critical findings reach you as soon as they are confirmed. The report describes each root cause with all of its instances, references to files and functions, steps to reproduce, the rating and recommended priority, and, if you want, concrete changes to the code. Where findings point to a broader weakness, it says what to improve beyond the individual findings. In a feedback call, we walk your developers through the results, and for 30 days afterwards we answer their questions while they fix them. See an example, from finding to fix.
-
Fix it together
OptionalOur analysts work hands-on with your team on the fixes: proposing them as pull requests, reviewing your developers’ own fixes, running joint sessions on root causes, giving trainings where they help, or working within your team for an agreed period.
-
Retest and keep it fixed
OptionalWe verify each fix both in the code and against the running system, and rerun the queries written for each pattern to confirm that no instance remains. On request, we hand these queries over, so that you can run them in your own build pipeline and catch a vulnerability that is reintroduced later. These queries can grow into custom static analysis for your whole code base.
What You Get
Always included
- A report with root causes, all instances, priorities, and remediation guidance
- Immediate notice of critical findings
- A feedback call with your developers
- Follow-up support for 30 days after the report
On request
- Concrete code changes for each finding
- Queries written for your code base
- A check of whether earlier security fixes were complete, where the version history is available
- Handover of the queries for your own build pipeline
Optional
- Remediation support: pull requests, review of your fixes, joint sessions, and trainings
- An embedded security team: our analysts working within your team
- A retest of every finding
Working With Teams Abroad
Most of our clients are in Europe and North America, and we work with them remotely. A code-led assessment needs access to your code and to your developers, not a desk in your office: we work from a copy of your repository or inside an environment you provide, and stay in touch with your team through calls and the channels you already use. South Africa is on the same time as Central Europe in summer and one hour ahead in winter, so our working days overlap with those of European teams.
AI, Used in a Measured Way
Where you permit it, we use AI to make our analysts more effective, not to replace them. Our assessment harness MAGE reports no finding that has not been proven exploitable and independently validated, and records tool evidence unaltered, without passing it through a language model. Whether AI is used, and which inference provider processes your code, is agreed with you in writing. MAGE can run on inference you choose, such as your own cloud account or a local GPU cluster. See MAGE.
Built on Our Research
Our methods come from our own research: the code property graph, invented by our CEO and recognized with the IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy Test of Time Award in 2024; pattern-based vulnerability discovery; learned type inference for data-flow analysis in dynamically typed languages; and scalable taint tracking. See our research for more.
Coverage
To make sure no relevant class of vulnerability is overlooked, we check each assessment against established references: the OWASP Application Security Verification Standard (ASVS) and Web Security Testing Guide (WSTG) for web applications and APIs, the OWASP Mobile Application Security Verification Standard (MASVS) for mobile applications, the OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications for applications built on large language models, and the CIS Benchmarks for infrastructure and cloud configuration. These references define what we cover. The approach above is how we find vulnerabilities within it.
