SEE YOU AT BSIDES CAPE TOWN 2026

We are proud to be a silver sponsor of BSides Cape Town 2026, taking place on 4 and 5 December.

BSides Cape Town is one of the highlights of the South African security calendar: a community-run conference where researchers, students, and practitioners come together to share their work.

We are also delighted that our security consultant, Rohan Dayaram, will be presenting his original research at this year’s conference.

A Root Awakening: The CSRF Strikes Back

You open a webpage. Somewhere else in your house, your router executes a command. An attacker now has complete control of the device at the centre of your home network.

That is the premise—and the demonstrated reality—behind Rohan’s talk.

Home networks are filled with small Linux computers: routers, cameras, televisions, decoders, smart switches, and countless other connected devices. We trust them with privileged access to our networks, yet most of us have little visibility into the software they run or the assumptions their manufacturers have made about security.

Rohan decided to examine one of those devices. Using only free tools and a laptop, he followed its web interface into the underlying code and discovered a path to complete, unauthenticated remote compromise on the latest available firmware.

At BSides Cape Town, he will demonstrate that attack and explain how a malicious webpage can reach beyond the browser to compromise a device on a victim’s local network.

The talk is not only about one vulnerable router. It is an accessible introduction to investigating the devices around you: choosing a place to begin, tracing features from the interface to the code that implements them, recognising when small weaknesses combine into something more serious, and working through the often difficult process of reporting what you find.

No specialist hardware lab is required. If you have a laptop and a device you have never thought to question, this talk may change how you look at your network.

Come and Say Hello

If you are attending BSides Cape Town, join us for Rohan’s talk and come meet the team. We would love to discuss security research, code-led assessments, or the suspicious collection of connected devices in your home. You can also get in touch before the conference.

We will publish the complete technical write-up after the conference. Until then, come see the research—and the live demonstration—at BSides Cape Town.
